Family reunion to a person with subsidiary protection status
Since 1 August 2018 close family members (spouses, minor single children and parents of minor children) of persons with subsidiary protection status living in Germany are entitled to apply for a family reunion visa. Family members willing to join need to register with their applications details using this website.
After successful registration and verification of the completeness of the application documents by IOM, the Embassy will allocate the appointment in chronological order of registration.
Please refrain from booking an appointment using the Embassy’s general appointment system, as you will not be able to apply and will be requested to register for an appointment using the above-mentioned website.
You are required to present a valid passport (min. validity 6 months).
The following documents must be presented to the Embassy during your appointment. Make sure to handover only complete applications.

- Filled in application form (national visa) + declaration form (Section 54 (2) 8 in conjunction with Section 53 of the Residence Act)
- 3 biometric passport photos (not older than 6 months)
- Copy of all pages of your passport (A4 size copy) ð Copy of all pages of your family member’s passport (A4 size copy)

- Copy of the notice of recognition of subsidiary protection of the BAMF
- Copy of “Meldebescheinigung” of the family member living in Germany, not older than 6 months
- Your Original Singhalese/Tamil birth certificate + scanned copy certified by the Ministry of Foreign relations + translation
- Proof of relationship to the family member in Germany (to join a spouse: Original Singhalese/Tamil marriage certificate + scanned copy certified by the Ministry of Foreign Relations and translation, to join a child: Original Singhalese/Tamil marriage certificate + scanned copy certified by the Ministry of Foreign Relations + translation + the child’s Original Singhalese/Tamil birth certificate + scanned copy certified by the Ministry of Foreign Relations + translation)
- If available: your proof of German language courses attended in Sri Lanka/proof of your educational Degrees or Diploma
- If available: additional documents with translations about your present personal circumstances and your living conditions in Sri Lanka
- If available from the family member in Germany: language certificates , employment contract, tenancy agreement (“Mietvertrag”)
- If applicable: Original Singhalese/Tamil Decree Absolute and Decree Nisi + scanned copy certified by the Ministry of Foreign Relations mentioning the custody of the child + translation
- If applicable: Original Singhalese/Tamil death certificate of the deceased parent + copy + translation
Please submit all original documents with two copies. Moreover, every set has to be sorted already in the correct order as showed above!
Fee: EUR 75 (to be paid in Rs., by credit card or cash, not applicable when joining a German spouse) – no refund in case of rejection! Conversion into Rs. is made based on the exchange rate at the time of application.
As your application will also be forwarded to the competent immigration authorities in Germany, the visa procedure will take at least three months. Furthermore, the required formal verification of Sri Lankan documents has to be completed. During that time no status inquiries are answered. Please refrain from contacting us during the procedure of your application. |
Note further:
False or falsified documents will lead to the refusal of the visa and / or further consequences.
Incomplete applications may result in refusal. Complete documentation does not guarantee a visa approval.
The German Embassy Colombo reserves the right to ask for additional documents and / or call applicant for additional information or interview.
