Creating financial independency for the families by using their land to cultivate income-generating agricultural products.

In cooperation with the “Diriya Katha Development Foundation” the German Embassy is supporting the project of growing economically important Vanilla & Nai Miris (“King of Chilies”) to empower women of Kahagala South of Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat of Matara District. It focuses on creating more financial independency for the families by using their land to cultivate income-generating agricultural products.

The majority of the families in the Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat of Matara District do not make use of their farmland, due to lack of knowledge and financial resources to implement basic infrastructure. The project addresses 180 families, which will be equipped with 100 vanilla plants and 100 Nai Miris plants per family at the beginning. Additionally compost, coir dust and the necessary knowledge will be provided for a start.

Vanilla takes around 2 years before the pods can be harvested. Therefore, the Nai Miris cultivation will be the main income source for the first years. The families will earn an estimated amount of 20.000 Rs. per month by growing the “King of Chilies”. Later on, as the project evolves and vanilla can be reaped, the monthly salary is estimated to double to 40.000 Rs. per months.
